Blogger, WordPress Or WordPress? (Part III)
The weekends are flying by here at Mark-McWilliams.com and it feels like yesterday since my last blog post. But as promised, I’m here with part 3! It was only Wednesday past that we published Part 1. And on Friday, Part 2 went out!
So without keeping you waiting any longer, lets get started!…
6. Blogger
When you get started out online, money is sometimes an issue. Now what I mean by that, is you don’t have the funds just yet to purchase a domain and some web hosting. That’s when Blogger.com comes in handy!
Blogger.com allows you to create a blog online in just a matter of minutes. Not even that…it’s more like seconds!
Now, a little story for you. Way back in 2007 (Sometime in January I think!) I was so pleased to have created my Blogger blog, that I thought I ruled the world. The only trouble was that the big boss didn’t like something I had said.
First of all, it was stupidity on my part! Blogger is a perfect tool to get you started blogging online, however you don’t actually own the blog. Let me explain, the only things you can really do is write posts. It’s ‘hosted’ by Blogger, and if they decide to do something then you just have to go along with it. (Sadly!)
So to get started, Blogger is GREAT! Go check it out today.
7. WordPress.com
Now we’re getting a little closer to what I like best!
Again this is a site were you can freely setup a blog and start blogging to your hearts content. But as with Blogger, you don’t actually own the blog. (I know this sounds really strange, but I suppose it’s just life right?!)
With WordPress.com you get a lot more features that what is available through Blogger. At the end of the day, it’s up to you what one you intend going with. I’ve tried both out, but you can’t beat a self-hosted blog! It’s true though, and I don’t think I’ll ever turn back.
Introducing…
8. WordPress.org
A self-hosted blog you say? Well you really can’t get any better than that! – You can see here that Mark-McWilliams.com is a WordPress blog that I own. (I can pretty much do whatever I like!)
If you have a host, then I’d really suggest you go down this route.
There are many advantages to this, one being that it can’t just get deleted by someone who at the end of the day is only trying to do their job. Many successful people work with self-hosted blogs each and everyday.
Do you want to one of those successful people?
If you haven’t already checked out the WordPress.org site then what’s stopping you. It’s a goldmine of information, tips, advice and much much more. You can’t go wrong with blogging and WordPress.
And that’s it, part 3 complete! So what did you think?
There are going to be some people who might question my reasoning for regarding WordPress and Blogger as Marketing Tools…but the simple fact is, they are simply amazing tools. Without them, how could I be here typing this today?!
Hi Mark, you have highlighted some really useful resources there.I have just created my first Blog using Wordpress, after months of avoiding it like the plague as everything seemed to be so complicated (I think it’s a psychological problem I have!). I’ve hit one or two problems that I have easily sorted out and I’m quite pleased with the result.
No doubt I shall be picking your brains shortly about the best plugins and widgets to install!
Thanks Mark.
Colin
Thanks Mark,
I didn’t realise Wordpress.org existed – what have I been missing eh!!
Thanks for the tips. You may recognise my pic in your community, if not the Northern Greeting!!
John O’York
Excellent advice Mark.
I am currently advising true beginners to try a Blogger blog to get their feet wet. They just get used to making posts and the general feel of things. After all, they are not promoting it at all. They are practicing and I read it and maybe a few friends or peers on Step By Step to encourage each other.
But my advice is the same as yours, if you are ready to begin your business blog in whatever niche — Use a self-hosted WordPress blog. It takes you a step up in the professional ranks.
Carol
Colin, fire away and pick as much of my brain as you like! Talking about plugins though, I think I’m going to post about that soon! – I have a post about plugins that was published a while back, but because of WordPress Upgrades, I think I’ll need to amend the list a little. (It’s on the list of things to-do now!)
It’s nice of you to stop by John, and to cut a long comment short, you’ve been missing out on quite a bit! WordPress.com works with the same software, but it’s not the same not having a self-hosted blog. The amount of freedom you have, it’s just fantastic!
Hi Carol, thanks for commenting! I stopped using a Blogger blog really, once I started with WordPress! – A WordPress blog really does make you more professional, and whats best about it is that it’s ALWAYS being upgraded! Version 2.6 was released and they are almost starting with 2.7 that looks to be an amazing version! – Lets wait and see as they always say!
Thanks
Mark
